How to Safely Get That Sun-Kissed Glow

It’s that time of year. Everyone is starting to think about the spring and summer … the warm sun, days spent on the beach, tank tops and short shorts, and most of all, a beautiful full body tan. Whether it’s healthy or not, most of us are guilty of wanting that sun-kissed glow. A tan makes us feel thinner, hides certain imperfections, and just makes us feel better.

Unfortunately, the desire for tan skin comes at an expense. Now, more than ever before, we are aware of the dangers of too much sun. Premature wrinkles, age spots, and deadly skin cancer are all consequences of basking in the sun. So, are we doomed to live a life of pale skin? While it’s completely OK to relish in your natural pastiness, there are ways to get a little glow without overdoing the sun. Take  look at these small tips for safely getting that sun-kissed glow.

Buy It in a Bottle

The initial thought of a self tanner may scare you off. Fortunately, long gone are the days of orange hues and tiger stripes. Today’s self tanners are much better, leaving you with a slight (or even dark) tan with few ill side effects. How do you pick the right tanner? First, know your skin tone. If you’re Snow White fair, don’t buy the dark, and instead go for the tanner made for fair skin. You should also read about the different kinds of tanners. There are lotions, oils, mousses, and wipes, each with its own set of benefits and problems. Experiment with discreet of your body before fully committing, and always follow the directions to a tee.

Be Patient

Another great way to get a tan is with the natural sun. But wait, isn’t that dangerous as well? Yes, but if you are extremely careful, you can get a tan without too much damage. After all, we are going to get some sun at some point; it’s inevitable. If you want to lay out, do it for very small amounts of time over a long period of time. You should also make sure that you wear a sunscreen all the time, even when you’re laying out. It sounds counterproductive, but the sun’s rays will still seep through. Be prepared for this approach to take months, but doing it slowly with protection is one of the best ways to darken your skin in a safe manner.

Body Bronzer

If you’re not keen on the typical self-tanner, try getting a body bronzer instead. Females may already know of bronzers for the face. This is the same thing, but it’s meant to give you a quick and short-term tan. Need to look good for that date or special occasion? A body bronzer may be the perfect solution. You can usually buy these in a lotion or a spray, and the effects wash off after a few days. Make sure you follow the directions, and remember that your skin is not protected from the sun, even though it looks darker. Keep slathering on the sunscreen so that you have ultimate protection.

Your best bet, if you want to protect your skin as much as possible, is to learn to love your natural color. But if you really want a tan, these are better choices than the typical tanning bed or baby oil in the sun. Always be careful and cautious, make good choices, and you can enjoy healthy skin with a slight, but noticeable glow.
